Kahramanmaraş

Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) is one of the pioneer cities of Turkish Literature, located at the  north-east corner of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a city surrounded by mountains, bringing together glimpses of 3 different climates.

The city carries the name of the capital of Gurgum Kingdom, Markas (Marhas). Kahramanmaraş(heroic Maraş) name given to the city after its legendry resistance during Turkish independence war.The city has been home to Hittite, Urartu, Assyria, Mede, Achaemenid, Macedon, Seleucid, Roman, Seljuk, Ayyubid, Mongol, Mamluk, and Ottoman civilizations; which brought the rich culture Maraş possesses today.

The city is a national pioneer in the textile, jewellery, and metal sectors. The city is also famous for the worldwide known Turkish ice cream with a specific flavour (goat milk), accredited as “Maraş ice-cream”.

The population of the city is around 1.18 million, and has two universities with 35,600 students, making it young and lively. The city is a home for Turkish Literature with cultural centers where theatres, shows, exhibitions, concerts, symposiums, festivals, and panels are held with 35 libraries and 12 museums.

Within the city’s borders the Germencia Antique City, 3 castles, historical Ottoman mansions, historical mosques, bridges, unique nature, and structures from the 4th century; take place along with the city’s unique nature. Başkonuş plateau, Yedikuyular ski resort are the examples of the rich nature destinations.
