Main Theme of “EXPO 2023” is “Nature-Friendly City and Sensitivity”. One of the fundamental problems of the 21st Century is urbanization phenomenon that is spreading globally. With the increasing population, the increasing consumption of natural resources, the opening of natural areas to development and the completely human and production-oriented space design threaten the future of our planet. When evaluated from this perspective; while the expression “Nature-Friendly City” indicates the new style that global urbanization should take, “Sensitivity” emphasizes the necessity of human interest and attention to nature and natural life. EXPOs are the next most important international events after the Olympics, which enable the development and improvement of countries and cities, increase the awareness of the city both nationally and internationally, give the public an experience of education, culture, art and entertainment, stimulate domestic and foreign tourism, create new business opportunities and potentials, from the World Cup and the Olympics.
A total of 2 million visitors are expected to come to the area, including 1 million from Kahramanmaraş in general, 600 thousand from the provinces of the region, 250 thousand from nationals and 150 thousand from abroad. We embarked on a long and laborsome journey to bring this international organization to our city and our people.
At the 70th (AIPH) General Assembly held in Padova, Italy on September 18, 2018, the candidacy of Onikişubat for the 2023 International Horticulture EXPO was unanimously accepted, provided that no vote was cast against it. EXPO 2023 will bring economic development not only in the field of horticulture, but also with sectoral meetings to be held with other EXPO cities and participating countries with international cooperation agreements and will have positive results extending to the neighboring geography. I would like to thank everyone who contributed and wish that it will bring good luck to our country and city.”
